Whether you’re considering switching careers, establishing your current network, or launching a new business, your online presence is important. Here are four easy ways to update your LinkedIn profile and improve your networking.
1. Update Your Profile Photo
According to LinkedIn, profiles with headshots are fourteen times more likely to be viewed than those without a profile photo. Your headshot should be clear, pleasant, and professional, and only include you in the picture. Consider treating yourself to a professional photo shoot if you don’t have any presentable headshots or use the one from your company’s team page.
2. Get a Custom URL Link
The URL for your LinkedIn’s public profile is just a long string of characters randomly assigned to you. To create your custom LinkedIn profile URL, go to your LinkedIn homepage and click on your Edit Profile. Once you’re on your own Profile page, click on the gear icon next to your profile URL underneath your photo. The gear icon will take you to your Public Profile page where you can set up your custom LinkedIn Profile URL as long as it’s not taken. If your name is taken, use your first, middle, and last name instead. Once you figure out this feature your URL will look like this: http://www.linkedin.com/in/yourname. Having a custom URL makes it easier for people to find you (and it’s easy to create, we promise).
3. Add Some Media to Your Profile
Adding media to visually show off your work not only provides portfolio materials for recruiters to reference, but also improves the appearance of your profile. Try adding video, presentation decks, images, documents, or graphics to your LinkedIn profile. You can create Slideshare decks to give the networking world a taste of your presentation skills and style. A Slideshare deck is like a PowerPoint presentation that a visitor can click through to learn how you think, and how you communicate. You can build a Slideshare deck for free and display it on LinkedIn, as well as on the Slideshare site. Since the majority of people are visual learners, media is one of the best ways to grab attention.
4. Stay Active
The more active you are on LinkedIn the more your profile pops up on your connections’ news feeds. You can comment, like, and share posts to gain visibility, or write a blog post for free. This is a great way to gain exposure and make new online business connections. Next time you log onto LinkedIn, click on “Publish a Post” and start writing, you can always save it and finish it later. If you need writing topics, check out the AAFA Blog for some inspiration.
Another way to stay active and increase visibility is by changing your profile setting to “open to new opportunities” if you’re looking for a job. Only recruiters are able to see this setting, so you don’t have to worry about your current coworkers seeing your status if you’re trying to be discreet.
